Challenge

In March 2020,  Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel was preparing to reopen following a major renovation that involved an investment of €3.5 million. However, no sooner had it opened its doors than it was forced to close them the following week. The pandemic forced to postpone the reopening. Throughout 2020 and 2021, there were many months with zero guests, leading to a complete loss of morale among the team and staff, as well as great uncertainty about the future. The return to normality promised a new era for tourism, but it was essential to mark a turning point in this story, with optimism.

Strategy

To reward employees for their demonstrated effort and resilience, and to prepare hotel operations for the return of guests, we decided to turn the Group's 247 employees into luxury guests!

In a surprise initiative in February 2022, Onyria invited its staff to take off their uniforms and check into the five-star hotel with their families, enjoying luxury service and a full range of activities, including yoga, fitness classes, and golf, as well as dinner and a party.

Every employee, including those from the food and beverage department, became a "Guest for a Day," boosting morale ahead of the anticipated tourism recovery.

Results

The first goal was immediately met: the cheerful attitude of the staff at the Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel. The second goal reflects the initiative's success: the press, covering tourism, human resources, lifestyle, and even television followed the role-reversal initiative.
